How Do Hormone Imbalances Affect Women’s Moods?

Hormones regulate many different body processes. Not only do hormones help to control metabolism, reproductive function, and sexual health, but also regulate mood and mental well-being. Balanced hormones are vital not only for physical health, but also for good mental health.

Board-certified in internal medicine and functional medicine (including hormone therapy) Corey Howard, MD, and the team at Howard Health and Wellness provide comprehensive care to balance your hormones. Hormone imbalance happens when the endocrine system releases too much or too little of a hormone.

Hormonal imbalances can trigger or aggravate symptoms like mood swings, anxiety, and depression. Because female hormones are complex, it’s important to see a provider trained in balancing hormones and be aware of how hormones and mental health are connected.

How hormone imbalance affects women’s mental health

There are several hormones that can affect your mental health when they're out of whack.

Sex hormone imbalance

Hormones have a significant impact on women's brain chemistry, mental health, and mood. The sex hormones estrogen, progesterone, and testosterone all play vital roles in your health and emotional well-being. When these hormones are out of balance, it can exacerbate or contribute to mental health problems.

Mood swings is one of the most common symptoms of hormone imbalance in women. Severe mood swings can develop during perimenopause as estrogen and progesterone levels fluctuate.

In the early stages of the menopause transition, hormonal fluctuations are usually more dramatic. Hot flashes and night sweats, for example, can cause unnecessary stress, poor sleep, and worry, all of which can affect your moods.

Thyroid hormone imbalance

Thyroid hormone imbalance has known effects on mental health. Low thyroid hormone can cause low mood, apathy, and depression, while too much thyroid hormone can cause anxiety. If you have a predisposition for mood disturbance, you’re more vulnerable to the effects of hormone imbalance on mental health.

Diagnosing hormone imbalance

Advanced lab tests can identify which hormones are out of balance and contributing to your mood swings and other symptoms. Following lab testing, you can meet with Dr. Howard for a one-on-one consultation. Dr. Howard has extensive training and focuses on hormone health and balance.

Along with reviewing your lab findings, Dr. Howard discusses your symptoms and medical history and talks with you about how hormone imbalance may be affecting your life. He works with each patient to build a complete and individualized treatment plan that will safely and effectively address any hormone issues and help you avoid unwanted symptoms like mood swings.

Balancing your hormones with pellet therapy

Balancing your hormones is crucial to your overall well-being. Dr. Howard uses a variety of methods, including pellet therapy to treat sex hormone imbalance. This involves implanting a very small pellet (about the size of a grain of rice) under your skin to continuously deliver the crucial hormones you need to bring things back into balance.

The hormones are bioidentical. This means that they are exactly the same structurally as the hormones your body naturally makes. Your body uses them as it would its own hormones and cannot tell the difference.

Pellets stay in place doing their job for about three months and sometimes longer. You’ll come in to have your pellets replaced and Dr. Howard may order repeat testing to ensure that your dose is just right. Unlike other forms of hormone replacement therapy that delivers a dose of hormones all at once, pellet therapy closely mimics your body’s natural hormone circadian rhythm, delivering only what you need. This helps to avoid over-or-under treatment.

Pellet therapy is extremely effective at relieving not only mood changes related to sex hormone imbalance, but also other symptoms like fatigue, hot flashes, low libido, and night sweats.

If you have low thyroid, Dr. Howard can address this with thyroid hormone replacement -- typically in the form of a tablet or capsule taken daily.
