Heart Health Q & A

What is heart health?

Heart health is an umbrella term that describes how healthy your heart is and your risk of heart-related complications like high blood pressure, high cholesterol, heart disease, heart attack, and stroke. Prevention measures and detecting heart issues early can reduce your risk of serious or life-threatening complications.

How can I optimize my heart health?

There are several ways you can optimize your heart health and lower your risk of developing heart disease. Examples include:

  • Exercise regularly
  • Increase your fruit and vegetable intake
  • Eat plenty of plant-based foods
  • Reduce your intake of animal fats
  • Avoid processed meats
  • Don’t smoke
  • Reduce stress
  • Limit your sodium intake
  • Maintain a healthy body weight
  • Properly manage chronic diseases

Keep blood sugar, blood pressure, and blood cholesterol in check to reduce your risk of heart problems in the future. Dr. Howard helps you do so.

How does my provider screen for heart problems?

When you arrive at Howard Health & Wellness for a physical exam and heart health screening, Dr. Howard checks your body weight, blood pressure, and other vital signs. Dr. Howard reviews your medical history, asks about symptoms you may have, and completes a comprehensive physical examination.

He might recommend you undergo blood tests, an electrocardiogram (EKG), echocardiogram, or diagnostic imaging procedures to evaluate your heart health and develop a treatment plan as needed. During an EKG, Dr. Howard places electrodes on your skin in strategic areas to record your heart’s electrical activity and detect potential irregularities. Dr. Howard utilizes comprehensive blood work screening to determine your risk of heart disease, and helps you implement a treatment plan specifically designed for you. He also orders CT calcium score testing, which takes a picture of your heart vessels to determine if calcified cholesterol plaques that cause coronary artery disease are present. If necessary, he will refer you for further testing, such as a stress test.

Will I require treatment?

Based on the results of your physical exam, medical history, and diagnostic tests, Dr. Howard lets you know if you require treatment to optimize heart health and reduce your risk of heart disease. He typically recommends:

  • Adopting healthy lifestyle habits
  • Diet or exercise changes
  • Taking dietary supplements
  • Medical weight loss
  • Medications
  • Further diagnostic testing
  • Minor surgical procedures
  • Specialist referrals

If you have severe heart problems requiring a specialist’s care, Dr. Howard will refer you to a highly trained cardiologist near you.
