Physicals Q & A

What are physicals?

Physicals at Howard Health & Wellness include evaluation, diagnosis, and treatment of illnesses, injuries, and diseases. Dr. Howard offers men’s and women’s physicals to ensure you’re in good health or to detect minor health issues before they become problematic.

What are the benefits of physicals?

Some of the numerous benefits associated with undergoing annual physicals include detection of:

  • Diabetes or prediabetes
  • High blood pressure
  • High cholesterol
  • Heart disease
  • Cancer
  • Depression or anxiety
  • Arthritis
  • Asthma and allergies
  • Other chronic conditions
  • Illnesses and injuries

Seeking treatment for these and other health problems helps you properly manage your condition to prevent serious complications.

What should I expect during a physical?

During physicals with Dr. Howard, you can expect the following:

Vital sign check and medical history review

When you arrive for your physical your weight and vital signs including your blood pressure will be checked. Dr. Howard will review your medical history, including symptoms you may have, past surgeries and diagnoses, medications you take, and family history of disease.

Physical exam

During a physical, Dr. Howard examines your eyes, ears, throat, breathing, heartbeat, reflexes, abdomen, and limbs. He can also complete a prostate exam in men.

Diagnostic testing

You might not require diagnostic testing if you’re in good health and have a low risk of disease. In other instances, Dr. Howard may recommend blood tests, urine or stool tests, tissue biopsies, an electrocardiogram (EKG), X-rays, or other diagnostic imaging tests.

While you may not need treatment after a physical if you’re in good health, there are always recommendations that can help you optimize your health. Based on the results of your physical and diagnostic tests, Dr. Howard might recommend making lifestyle changes, taking dietary supplements or medications, undergoing further diagnostic testing or minor surgical procedures, or seeking care from a specialist.

How often should I schedule physicals?

As a general rule, schedule routine physicals with Howard Health & Wellness every year. However, you might need to see Dr. Howard more often if he recommends it, if you experience new or unusual symptoms, if you’re at risk of a disease, or if you get injured.

Don’t neglect your health or let a minor medical problem turn into a serious complication. Call the Howard Health & Wellness office today or reach out via email at and we will get back with you as soon as possible.
